History of Key Club

Information brought to you by keyclub.org

Key Club's Origin

Key Club was started in May 1925 in Sacramento, California, by the local Kiwanis club. The original purpose of Key Club was to provide an active, vocational guidance program for the student body. Later, in response to many other opportunities for service in the school, Key Club began to expand. Today, Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world. It has become the high school service club.

At the outset, Key Club grew with the help of Kiwanians who visited the Sacramento club and came away with the idea of introducing the high school service club to their own communities. This idea spread quickly, and soon Key Clubs began to form across the United States.

By 1939, Florida had enough clubs to hold a state convention and form an association of Key Clubs, thus starting the first district. In 1943, other districts, which had since formed, traveled to Florida for the first International Convention. There, Malcolm Lewis, from West Palm Beach, Florida, was elected the first International President.

Key Club experienced a banner year in 1946, during which the first Canadian club was established, and the official publication of Key Club International, KEYNOTER, was first published. Also in that year; at the convention in New Orleans, the Key Club International Constitution and Bylaws were adopted.

With the Constitution and Bylaws as a guide. Key Club International has since spread across North America and to seventeen countries, been divided into 31 districts.

Photobucket Photobucket

How much does it cost?
Convention costs vary every year. The cost can be anywhere around $100 - $200. But with the help of fundraisers and grants, the price can be significantly reduced. Whenever our club has a fundraiser, it would be helpful if everyone in the club participated.

Contests and awards One way to encourage clubs to be outstanding is to reward them. Every year, the Cali-Nev-Ha District has contests for clubs as well as individuals. Some example of the contests are Website, Non-Traditional Scrapbook, Bulletin Editor, Club Video, etc.

Major Emphasis Project

Check this page for the "Theme and Major Emphasis Program (MEP)." The major emphasis project for 2009-2010 is "Live 2 Learn."

Basic Info

At Key Club International's first convention in 1946, the organization was given the responsibility of instituting a program that would bring together all Key Club's direct members' efforts and energies into an area that would truly make an International impact. This tradition is still followed today through the development of the Theme and Major Emphasis Program (MEP).

Children: Their Future, Our Focus logo "Children: Their Future, Our Focus" is Key Club International's Major Emphasis Program. It unites Key Clubs under the banner of service that deals with the most important part of our community, our youth. Focusing on the personal development and social interaction of children, Key Club members can help them learn through mentoring, making friends, and working together. As children are taught to work with others, Key Club members open the doors to their future.

Each year Key Club International teams up with other organizations. The Major Emphasis Program focuses on a specific organization during each season of the year. As Key Clubbers plan their club's service programming for the year, they are to keep in mind that with each new season comes a new opportunity to make a difference. Each Key Club is encouraged to participate with organizations as they join together to make a difference in the life of children.
